Measurement Tolerance
Use the Measurement Tolerance calculation to determine the precision of a measurement based on the following factors.
- Tolerance as a percentage measurement value (relative)
- Tolerance in engineering units off the measurement value (absolute)
The measurement tolerance calculation is performed according to the equations listed below. The tolerance is calculated by adding the relative and absolute tolerance as shown by the following equation:

t = tolerance
tR = relative tolerance (%)
tA = absolute tolerance
M = measurement
EXAMPLE: Measurement Tolerance
A flow meter has a known precision of 2% of the volumetric flow rate with a numeric precision of .5 bbl/day. What is the tolerance on a measurement of 10,000 bbl?
