Heat ExchangerFigure 331: Energy Balance Calculation - Heat Exchanger Flow

The heat exchanger allows transfer of energy between two process streams without a mass exchange. The mass balance is satisfied for two sides, shell and tubes, independently. Energy is conserved and is assumed to be transferred between the heat exchanger sides. The following mass balance equations are used for the shell and tubes, respectively:

InputS - OutputS - 0

InputT - OutputT = 0

In addition, for the energy balance of the heat exchanger, it is assumed that the energy is transferred from one heat exchanger side to the other according to the following equation:

Where:

InputS = the shell input stream

OutputS = the shell output stream

InputT = the tubes input stream

OuputT = the tubes output stream

hIS = the specific energy of the shell input stream

hOS = the specific energy of the shell output stream

hIT = the specific energy of the tubes input stream

hOT = the specific energy of the tubes output stream
